For most of my life, I have just said what is on my mind. Most of the time things turn out okay for me and people can take my direct honesty head on, but sometimes it gets me into trouble. While I am better than I was when I was a child, I still do make mistakes and get in trouble because of my mouth.
But one thing that I have counted on over the years has been my father. He is one of those people that just sits back and listens to what is going on and he only speaks when necessary. I’ve always envied his ability to say the right thing at the right time.
He also has a good track record of setting me straight.
For example, awhile ago I was having an argument over economics. I was arguing that increasing the minimum wage was good for businesses and people so that they could have a better standard of life.
But my father pulled me aside and said that I should maybe learn about what I was talking about instead of just saying the same thing that the masses say.
He handed me a book, Ten Living Minimum Wage Problems by Steve Baba to read. Inside I learned that the nonsense coming out of my mouth was just nonsense – I didn’t know what I was talking about.
After reading the book, I will be better equipped to have a conversation about the economy the next time. I am so thankful that I am smarter because of my father.
